Update on Ontario’s Recycling Program for Hastings Highlands

Update on Ontario’s Recycling Program for Hastings Highlands

Following the launch of Ontario’s new Recycling Program, we recognize that residents have questions about recycling at our waste sites and the changes this program brings to the Municipality going forward. We are working together with Circular Materials Ontario to support a smooth transition period and maintain existing service levels.

What you need to know:

Historically, Ontario’s blue box recycling programs were managed by communities who were responsible for roughly half of the costs, with producers responsible for the other half. On Jan 1, 2026, Ontario completed its transition to an enhanced recycling system where producers are 100% responsible for funding and managing the recycling program. This new system is managed and administered by Circular Materials Ontario.

What does this mean for Hastings Highlands?

What stays the same:

    • Your residential recycling & waste disposal is accepted as before, and all materials previously collected will continue as before at each site,

    • The waste site schedules remain the same as before and will continue to change seasonally, and

    • Waste (garbage) will not be affected by this change.

What is new:

    • Updated bins and layouts at each of the waste sites,

    • More materials are now eligible for recycling; in Hastings Highlands and across Ontario,

    • E360 will join Emterra as the approved waste services provider at all waste sites in Hastings Highlands, and

    • New changes for industrial, commercial, and institutional property owners*.

* Changes for industrial, commercial, and institutional (IC&I) recycling *

IC&I properties in Hastings Highlands include:

  • All private sector businesses

  • Not-for-profit organizations

IC&I recycling is accepted at (3) three sites: South Baptiste, East Lake, and Hickey Road. Separate bins will be available for disposal of IC&I recyclable materials.
